Take the scenic route through Clarksburg’s wine country, where more than 7,000 acres are planted in some of California’s premier wine grapes. This area is features a slower-paced wine country where honeymooners can meander country roads in pursuit of a great wine experience.
A must-visit is the Old Sugar Mill, where ten vintners operate tasting rooms and offer personalized wine education, often times with the vintners themselves. Be sure to stop in and say hello to Todd Taylor, a former brewer who has brought his talents to the art of wine making, producing some of the best Tempranillos, Zinfandels and Primitivos.
One of our favorite wines here is Todd Taylor’s 17 Acre Zinfandel, in which Taylor used brewer’s yeast rather than the strains typically used in making wine. Vintners and brewers alike agree that the yeast, and controlling the production conditions, can make or break the quality of the vintage (or brew). Sipped side by side with the (traditional) Todd Taylor Zinfandel, you’ll notice a more earthy, loamy taste in the 17 Acre. So delicious.
The Sugar Mill site is pet, child, picnic and bicycle friendly, and just minutes from Sacramento, making it an ideal spot for a single-day wine tasting trip.
If you’re planning a special event, such as a wedding, you’ll want to consider one of our favorite event spaces. Weddings at the Old Sugar Mill are the perfect combination of rustic, traditional and chic…with exceptional wines, of course. Imagine the decor possibilities!
